II,2

This volume is part of A. C. Kruseman’s seminal work, Bouwstoffen voor een geschiedenis van den Nederlandschen boekhandel, published during the late 19th century. Commissioned by the Vereeniging ter bevordering van de belangen des boekhandels, the series serves as a meticulous chronicle of the Dutch book trade between 1830 and 1880. Kruseman, a respected publisher himself, sought to document the commercial and cultural evolution of the industry, providing a primary source for understanding the mid-19th-century intellectual marketplace.

The design of the work reflects the scholarly standards of its time, intended as a reference for institutional libraries and industry professionals. By releasing the volumes to benefit the 'Ondersteuningsfonds'—a relief fund for members of the book trade—the association ensured that the collection served both a practical historical purpose and a philanthropic mission. It remains a foundational text for historians of European printing and bookselling history, valued for its detailed records of professional networks and shifts in publishing practices.
