Where it came from
Boys Over Flowers, or Hana Yori Dango, was originally serialized by Yoko Kamio from 1992 to 2003. This colored edition was developed to breathe new life into the seminal shojo manga series, which remains one of the best-selling manga of all time. The coloring process was applied to provide a modern aesthetic for long-time fans while making the vibrant, fashion-forward world of the Eitoku Academy elite accessible to a new generation of readers.
The artistic vision for this edition prioritizes Kamio’s original character designs, which are known for their distinct 90s shojo style and expressive storytelling. By applying a digital color palette, the publishers aimed to emphasize the dramatic shifts in tone that define the series, from the high-stakes bullying and social hierarchy of the F4 to the intimate, comedic moments of the protagonist, Tsukushi Makino. The release was met with enthusiasm as a nostalgic tribute to a definitive work in the romance genre.
