Where it came from
The Bulletin of the Library Company of Philadelphia was established as an institutional publication to provide updates, catalogs, and scholarly insights regarding the holdings of the Library Company of Philadelphia. Founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and his associates, the Library Company served as one of the earliest subscription libraries in the American colonies, and its bulletins were intended to keep members informed about recent acquisitions and the intellectual life of the institution.
These bulletins reflect the broader mission of the Library Company, which has long functioned as a research library focusing on American history and culture. The design and presentation of these volumes were typically utilitarian and scholarly, prioritizing clarity and archival integrity. Over the years, they have been received as vital bibliographical tools for historians and researchers studying early American print culture and the evolution of archival science in the United States.
