Where it came from
The Bulletin of the Library Company of Philadelphia originated as a serial publication designed to keep the institution's membership and the broader scholarly community informed about its extensive archives and recent acquisitions. Established in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and his associates, the Library Company served as one of the earliest subscription libraries in the American colonies, and its bulletins were crafted to highlight the intellectual scope of its unique holdings in history, literature, and science.
The design of these bulletins followed the restrained, academic aesthetic characteristic of late 19th and early 20th-century bibliographical record-keeping. The publications were curated by the library's staff to provide clear, systematic listings of new additions and internal reports. These documents are valued today as historical artifacts that chronicle the evolution of American library sciences and the continuous growth of one of the nation's most significant private research collections.
