Where it came from
Busshi no Busshin: Kamakura Hanbun Busshiroku is a manga series authored and illustrated by Yuuki Kamatani, serialized starting in 2017. Set in the Kamakura period of Japanese history, the narrative follows a young sculptor tasked with creating Buddhist statues, blending historical craftsmanship with elements of fantasy and spiritual intrigue. The series explores the intricate relationship between an artist and their creations, grounding its fantastical premise in the historical reality of the Kei school of sculpture.
Kamatani, known for a distinctive and ethereal artistic style, designed the work to highlight the meticulous process of carving Buddha images. The manga was received as a contemplative entry in the seinen demographic, praised for its detailed character work and atmospheric depiction of medieval Japan. It serves as an exploration of faith and artistic obsession, reflecting Kamatani's recurring interest in the intersection of humanity and the divine.
