Where it came from
Busu ni Hanataba o., or 'A Bouquet for the Ugly,' is a shojo manga series created by the mangaka Sakura Roku. It was serialized in Kadokawa's Young Ace Up web magazine beginning in 2019, emerging during a period where unconventional protagonists and subversions of standard romance tropes gained significant traction in the Japanese digital manga market.
The story centers on Hana Tabata, a high school girl who believes her plain appearance renders her invisible, and her interactions with the popular, handsome Naruse. Sakura Roku designed the series to explore themes of self-esteem and the social pressures of high school life, balancing comedic misunderstandings with sincere emotional growth. The series has been recognized for its sympathetic portrayal of its lead character and its steady resonance with readers navigating similar experiences of insecurity.
