Cardfight!! Vanguard debuted in 2011 as a multimedia project created by Bushiroad, conceptualized by Takaaki Kidani, Akira Itou, and Satoshi Nakamura. Developed to compete within the established trading card game market, the project was designed to be immersive, launching simultaneously with a dedicated anime series to teach players the game mechanics through narrative progression. The game features a unique combat system centered on the 'vanguard' unit, which serves as the player's avatar on the field, aiming to blend tactical card placement with an element of risk defined by the 'drive check' mechanic.

The visual identity of the series was spearheaded by Akira Itou, a manga artist noted for his work on the Yu-Gi-Oh! R series. Itou’s character designs prioritize a dynamic, high-fantasy aesthetic that aligns with the card game's focus on distinct clans and evolving unit hierarchies. The property received a positive reception from the tabletop community for its approachable learning curve and consistent support, eventually expanding into an extensive franchise spanning multiple anime seasons, spin-off manga, and competitive international tournament circuits.
