Where it came from
Cat Ramen Story: Thomas the Kitten is part of the long-running Nekoramen series created by mangaka Kenji Sonishi. First serialized in the early 2000s, the series centers on a ramen shop run by a cat named Taisho, known for his somewhat abrasive personality and questionable culinary skills. This specific volume serves as a spin-off or thematic addition to the broader franchise, focusing on the character of Thomas the Kitten within the familiar, quirky world of the Nekoramen universe.
Sonishi’s design philosophy for the series utilizes a simplistic, gag-focused artistic style that leans into the absurd nature of animals running a human-centric business. The work is widely recognized for its deadpan humor and has been a staple in Japanese comedy manga magazines. It was received as a lighthearted, accessible entry in the slice-of-life genre, reflecting a period in manga where anthropomorphic, non-sequitur storytelling became a dominant trend in short-form publications.
