The Catalogue annuel de la librairie française was established in the late 19th century by bibliographer Daniel Jordell to provide a comprehensive, systematic record of the French publishing industry. Spanning the turn of the century, these volumes served as an essential reference tool for booksellers, librarians, and scholars, systematically indexing the output of French publishers by author, title, and subject matter to bring order to a rapidly expanding print market.

The design of these volumes follows the academic standards of the era, prioritizing clarity and ease of navigation for professional use. Upon their release, they were widely praised within literary circles and academic institutions for their utility, remaining a primary resource for researchers looking to track the bibliographic history of French literature from this period.
