This auction catalogue, published in the late 19th century, represents a significant record of the private libraries maintained by several prominent Dutch scholars and public figures of the era, including the statistician M. M. von Baumhauer and the theologian H. C. Rogge. Catalogues of this nature were frequently produced by Dutch auction houses to facilitate the liquidation of scholarly estates, serving as both a sales inventory for potential buyers and a permanent bibliographical record of the intellectual scope of these individuals.

The document functions as a multi-part archival resource, combining the collections of several distinguished academics such as the ichthyologist P. Bleeker and the orientalist L. Cohen Stuart. By grouping these specialized libraries together, the catalogue highlights the interdisciplinary nature of 19th-century intellectual life in the Netherlands, providing researchers today with a detailed snapshot of the academic resources that were considered essential to elite scholarly practice at that time.
