Catalogue of the books in the library of the Honorable society of Gray's inn, compiled by M.D. Severn

The Catalogue of the books in the library of the Honorable Society of Gray's Inn, compiled by M.D. Severn, serves as a formal record of the legal and scholarly collection held by one of London's four Inns of Court. Published in the mid-19th century, this volume was commissioned to provide members of the legal profession with an organized inventory of the society's extensive holdings, which span centuries of jurisprudential, historical, and literary works essential to the training of barristers.

The design of this catalogue reflects the scholarly rigor expected of a Victorian-era institution. M.D. Severn oversaw the systematic categorization of the library, ensuring that the layout facilitated ease of reference for legal scholars. The volume was received as a standard administrative tool for the library’s maintenance, providing a snapshot of the intellectual framework that underpinned the education and professional culture of Gray's Inn during a period of significant expansion in legal scholarship.
