This auction catalog was published in the late 19th century to facilitate the dispersal of a significant private collection of books, manuscripts, autographs, photographs, and scientific instruments. The items originated from the estates of several prominent Dutch figures, including Mr. Eijck van Zuylichem, Mr. C. L. Schuller tot Peursum, Dr. J. van Rossum, and Dr. A. F. Verhoeff, representing a typical cross-section of intellectual and bibliographic accumulation by the Dutch bourgeoisie during that era.

The catalog served as a functional guide for collectors and dealers participating in the public sale. Like many such catalogs from this period, its design is strictly utilitarian, prioritizing a categorized list of titles and objects to ensure clarity for prospective buyers. It reflects the standard practice of historical record-keeping through auction literature, providing a snapshot of the cultural and scientific curiosities valued by the professional class in Utrecht and Maartensdijk at the time of the collections' acquisition.
