Where it came from
Published in the 19th century by Auguste van Lokeren, this collection compiles the foundational charters and legal documents of the Abbey of Saint Pierre in Ghent. It emerged during a period of intense historical cataloging in Belgium, where scholars sought to preserve the medieval records of ecclesiastical institutions that had been disrupted by the political upheavals of the late 18th century.
The work serves as a primary source for medievalists and local historians, meticulously transcribing documents that detail land grants, jurisdictional rights, and internal administrative changes within the abbey. Van Lokeren's design for the volume focused on clarity and scholarly utility, aiming to organize fragmented archival materials into a coherent chronological sequence that remains a trusted reference for institutional history.
