Chocolate Christmas

Chocolate Christmas is a shōjo manga volume originally serialized in the Japanese magazine Nakayoshi during the winter of 1987. Created by Naoko Takeuchi before her global success with Sailor Moon, the story follows a young high school student who navigates the complexities of romantic expectations during the holiday season. It serves as an early example of Takeuchi’s distinct aesthetic, characterized by soft line work and a focus on the emotional interiority of its young protagonists.

The volume is often regarded by collectors as a foundational work that captures the transition between 1980s shōjo conventions and the more modernized, character-driven style Takeuchi would later refine. Published by Kodansha, it reflects the publisher's strategy of utilizing seasonal holiday narratives to engage teenage readers. Its design is typical of the era’s collected manga editions, prioritizing a charming, thematic cover art that emphasizes the cozy, festive atmosphere central to the plot.
