Where it came from
Circuit no Ookami, or The Circuit Wolf, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1975. Created by Satoshi Ikezawa, the series is credited with igniting the supercar boom in Japan during the late 1970s. It focuses on the protagonist Mutsuji Fubuki, a street racer who transitions to professional circuit racing, showcasing various high-performance European vehicles that were rarely seen on Japanese roads at the time.
The design and narrative focus reflected a shift in Japanese youth culture toward Western automotive luxury and speed. Ikezawa’s detailed illustrations of iconic models like the Lotus Europa and the Ferrari Dino helped elevate these machines to status symbols. The series was met with immense popularity, prompting widespread interest in imported sports cars and influencing a generation of automotive enthusiasts and later racing-themed manga.
