Clannad

Clannad originated as a visual novel developed by the studio Key, released for Windows in 2004. As the studio's third major project following the successes of Kanon and Air, it was conceived as a deeply emotional narrative focusing on themes of family, maturity, and the transition into adulthood. The writing team, led by Jun Maeda, aimed to break away from traditional romance genre tropes by centering the plot on the lifelong bonds formed between the protagonist, Tomoya Okazaki, and the people he encounters in his town.

The visual aesthetic of Clannad, characterized by the distinct character designs of artist Itaru Hinoue, became synonymous with the 'Key style' of the mid-2000s. While the character proportions were sometimes debated by critics for their unique, stylized appearance, the overall production was critically lauded for its sweeping orchestral score and poignant storytelling. The franchise expanded significantly beyond the original PC release, eventually spawning multiple manga adaptations, a highly influential anime series by Kyoto Animation, and numerous supplemental volumes that cemented its status as a seminal work in the visual novel medium.
