Where it came from
The Club Nintendo Comics originated in the early 1990s as a creative initiative by the German branch of Nintendo. They were distributed primarily through the Club Nintendo magazine, a promotional publication aimed at fostering loyalty among European gamers. These comics served to expand the lore of popular franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid, offering localized narratives that felt distinct from their Japanese counterparts.
The art and storytelling were heavily influenced by the contemporary European comic style, departing from traditional manga aesthetics to better resonate with regional sensibilities. Often written and illustrated by a small team of internal staff and local contributors, the series was received with curiosity by fans who valued the rare glimpses into expanded Nintendo world-building during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.
