Commedie

Carlo Goldoni’s Commedie represent a pivotal shift in Italian theatrical history, marking the transition from the improvised, stock-character-driven Commedia dell'arte to scripted, character-focused realism. Goldoni sought to reform the stage by introducing natural dialogue and complex, relatable social dynamics, effectively modernizing the narrative structure of 18th-century European comedy. These plays were written during a period of significant cultural refinement in Venice, where the author aimed to mirror the daily lives of both the bourgeoisie and the common people with wit and moral clarity.

The physical presentation of these volumes often reflects the enduring academic and cultural legacy of Goldoni’s work, which remains a cornerstone of the Western dramatic canon. Throughout the centuries, various publishing houses have curated collections of his plays to preserve the linguistic nuances and structural integrity of his scripts. These editions were designed to serve as both functional reading copies for scholars and as aesthetic artifacts meant to honor the Enlightenment-era traditions of theater that Goldoni championed.
