The Cyclopædia of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia was originally compiled by Edward Balfour, a surgeon in the Madras Army of the East India Company, and first published in 1858. Balfour spent decades gathering information during his travels across the Indian subcontinent, aiming to create a comprehensive reference work that cataloged the region's vast natural and commercial resources. The project emerged from a colonial-era desire to systematize knowledge of the East's geography, indigenous industries, and botanical and zoological wealth for both academic and practical economic use.

Balfour’s work is notable for its expansive scope, covering thousands of entries ranging from traditional medicinal plants to regional trade practices. As the work grew in ambition, subsequent editions significantly increased in size, culminating in the monumental three-volume third edition released in 1885. While it reflects the limitations and perspectives of nineteenth-century colonial scholarship, it remains a vital historical record of the biodiversity and economic landscape of the period as observed through the lens of Victorian-era scientific inquiry.
