The Cyclopædia of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia was compiled by Edward Green Balfour, a Scottish surgeon and orientalist who spent decades serving with the Madras Medical Service. Published in its first edition in 1857, the work served as a monumental attempt to catalog the natural resources, commercial products, and useful arts of the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding regions during the height of the British colonial era. Balfour designed the project to act as a comprehensive reference for officials, traders, and scholars who required a systematic overview of the vast botanical, mineral, and cultural diversity of the East.

Balfour’s work is characterized by its exhaustive scope and its reflection of Victorian-era scientific inquiry, where the systematic classification of natural history was tied closely to colonial administration and economic development. The Cyclopædia evolved through several editions, with the third and final edition published in 1885, expanding significantly in size to include thousands of entries. While it remains a primary source for historical insights into 19th-century trade and botany, modern scholars often analyze it both for its significant empirical contribution and as a classic artifact of the imperial encyclopedic tradition.
