De theologie van Prof. Dr. Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye: bijdrage tot de kennis der ethische theologie

Published in 1895, this volume represents a critical theological examination by the Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck. It was written as a scholarly engagement with the work of Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye, a foundational figure of the Ethische Theologie (Ethical Theology) movement in the Netherlands. Bavinck’s intent was to evaluate the strengths and boundaries of this movement, which sought to reconcile Reformed orthodoxy with modern consciousness and personal religious experience.

The text is deeply rooted in the nineteenth-century Dutch intellectual climate, where theologians were actively navigating the tensions between traditional dogma and the rise of modern biblical criticism. Bavinck, known for his methodical approach to systematic theology, produced this work to clarify his own position relative to the ethical school. Historically, the volume is considered an essential primary source for understanding the development of Reformed thought during a period of significant ecclesiastical and academic transition.
