De theologie van Prof. Dr. Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye: bijdrage tot de kennis der ethische theologie

This work was written by the prominent Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck, serving as a critical academic examination of the thought of Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye. Published during the late 19th century, the text emerged from the vibrant intellectual context of the Ethische Theologie movement in the Netherlands, a school of thought that sought to balance orthodox confessionalism with modern cultural and historical awareness. Bavinck, representing a more neo-Calvinist perspective, intended this volume to provide a theological evaluation of Chantepie’s emphasis on the organic relationship between faith and life.

The volume is a significant primary source for understanding the shifting theological landscape of the era, reflecting Bavinck's rigorous analytical style and his deep engagement with the academic discourse of his contemporaries. The design and presentation of such theological treatises at the time were strictly functional, reflecting the scholarly expectations of Dutch university presses. The work remains a key reference for historians of religion, particularly those interested in the intricate internal debates regarding the nature of ethics and dogma within 19th-century Dutch Protestantism.
