Where it came from
Death Note (Official Colored) represents a specific editorial project by Shueisha to revisit Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s seminal psychological thriller manga series. Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 2003, the series gained international acclaim for its complex moral narrative and Obata's distinct, sharp-lined aesthetic. This colored edition was produced to provide a new visual dimension to the original monochromatic pages, utilizing digital coloring techniques to emphasize the dark, atmospheric tone of the supernatural crime drama.
The decision to colorize the series was intended to revitalize the classic work for a modern audience while honoring Takeshi Obata’s original character designs. By applying a muted, gothic-inspired palette, the publishers aimed to heighten the tension inherent in the story of Light Yagami and the shinigami Ryuk. The release was generally received as a prestige collector's item, offering fans a fresh perspective on the iconic visual style that helped define the suspense manga genre of the mid-2000s.
