Demon City Hunter, known in Japan as Makai Toshi Hunter, was written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and serves as a foundational work in the dark fantasy and urban supernatural genres. First published in 1982, the novel depicts a post-apocalyptic Shinjuku that has been transformed into a nightmarish landscape ruled by demons following a massive earthquake. Kikuchi crafted this narrative to blend hard-boiled detective noir elements with cosmic horror, establishing a tone that would influence his later, more globally recognized series, Vampire Hunter D.
