Where it came from
Derideal originated as a long-running webcomic created by Chilean artist Andrés Barra, first appearing online in the mid-2000s. The series emerged from a digital-first environment, reflecting the rise of independent webcomics that blended science fiction themes with character-driven narratives. Barra crafted the work in a distinct illustrative style that evolved significantly over its tenure, utilizing the episodic nature of the web to build an expansive, dystopian world centered on the interactions between humans and synthetic beings.
The narrative focuses on themes of identity, transhumanism, and existential struggle within a hostile technological landscape. Barra’s design philosophy prioritized expressive character work and a consistent visual progression, which helped the series cultivate a dedicated following during the early years of the webcomic boom. As a creator-owned project, Derideal represents a foundational example of how independent creators leveraged digital distribution to maintain complete creative control over complex, serialized speculative fiction.
