Where it came from
Die Weltbühne was a prominent German weekly magazine focused on politics, art, and economics, founded in 1905 by Siegfried Jacobsohn. Originally titled Die Schaubühne, it transitioned to its iconic name in 1918, becoming one of the most influential platforms for left-leaning intellectual discourse during the Weimar Republic. It provided a critical space for investigative journalism and cultural commentary until its forced suppression by the National Socialist regime in 1933.
Following the death of Carl von Ossietzky, the magazine's most famous editor who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while imprisoned by the Nazis, his widow Maud von Ossietzky played a significant role in the publication's legacy and its brief post-war revival in East Germany. The journal is celebrated for its rigorous editorial standards and its commitment to anti-militarism, having featured contributions from esteemed writers such as Kurt Tucholsky and Erich Kästner, who sought to challenge the political status quo through sharp, incisive prose.
