Where it came from
Discommunication: Seireihen serves as a sequel to Riichi Ueshiba's surreal psychological horror manga series, Discommunication. Published in the late 1990s, the work continues the series' exploration of occult themes, teenage anxiety, and the surreal blending of dreams and reality. Ueshiba, known for his distinctively atmospheric and unsettling artistic style, utilized this installment to further elaborate on the complex relationship between his protagonists, Tsuzuki and Mato, amid a landscape of bizarre supernatural manifestations.
The design of the volume reflects Ueshiba’s penchant for avant-garde layouts and dense, symbolic imagery. By prioritizing dreamlike sequences and fragmented narrative structures, the artist intended to evoke a sense of disorientation in the reader, mirroring the instability of the characters' psychic states. Upon its release, the series was recognized primarily by a niche audience for its philosophical depth and unconventional approach to the horror genre, establishing Ueshiba as a unique voice in Japanese alternative manga.
