Disraeli's Novels

Benjamin Disraeli, who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, authored these novels throughout the mid-19th century while balancing a turbulent political career. The works, including titles like 'Vivian Grey' and 'Coningsby', were conceived as vehicles for his political philosophy and social commentary, often reflecting the aristocratic and parliamentary life he observed from within. They are notable for their sharp wit, focus on the 'Condition of England' question, and their portrayal of the interplay between power and society during the Victorian era.

The publication of Disraeli's novels was met with significant public interest, largely because they were authored by a prominent, unconventional politician who often blurred the lines between fiction and political manifesto. The editions collected today, such as those cataloged by Cornell University, represent the lasting print legacy of a man whose literary style was as flamboyant and distinctive as his political persona. They have remained subjects of scholarly study for their insight into the political discourse of 19th-century Britain and the evolution of the English novel.
