Where it came from
Doing Time, or Kei: Prison Diary, was authored by Hanawa Kazuichi following his actual incarceration in the late 1990s. The work serves as a semi-autobiographical account of his three-year sentence in a Japanese prison for the illegal possession of firearms, a situation that arose from his long-standing interest in historical weaponry. Written upon his release, the manga offers a rare, detailed look into the rigid, regimented life within the Japanese penal system.
The series is noted for its clinical and almost detached narrative style, which focuses less on the drama of imprisonment and more on the mundane minutiae of daily routines, strict behavioral codes, and institutional hierarchies. Hanawa’s illustration style is meticulous and stark, reflecting the sterile environment of his experience. It was critically received in Japan for its subversive subversion of the prison genre, stripping away sensationalism to provide a stark sociological observation of state-mandated discipline.
