Tensui

Tensui is a compilation of short manga works by Hanawa Kazuichi, a prominent figure in the gekiga movement known for his meticulous, woodblock-inspired aesthetic. Published as a collection of his atmospheric stories, the volume captures the artist's fascination with historical detail, folklore, and the darker, often surreal undercurrents of Japanese life. It emerged from a period when Hanawa was gaining recognition for his ability to blend traditional artistic techniques with the gritty, introspective storytelling style characteristic of the alternative manga scene.

The design of the collection centers on Hanawa's distinctive line work, which favors heavy, deliberate strokes that evoke the period aesthetics of the Edo or Meiji eras. Rather than aiming for the polished dynamism of mainstream commercial manga, the book focuses on building an immersive, claustrophobic world where the mundane and the supernatural coexist. Upon release, the collection was lauded by critics for its uncompromising artistic vision and its contribution to manga as a medium capable of sophisticated historical commentary and psychological depth.
