Where it came from
Dokudami no Hanasaku Koro, penned by Shiho Kido, emerged during a period of introspective seinen manga production in Japan. The series reflects the thematic preoccupations of its time, focusing on slice-of-life narratives that explore the quiet, often melancholic complexities of human relationships and personal growth. It was crafted to provide readers with a grounded, character-driven experience, moving away from the more kinetic or fantastical tropes common in mainstream manga to favor a deliberate, atmospheric approach.
The visual and narrative design of this volume serves to emphasize Kido's commitment to subtle storytelling. By utilizing a minimalist aesthetic and pacing, Kido aims to mirror the unassuming nature of the titular plant—the dokudami—which is often overlooked yet persistent. Upon its release, the series was noted by critics for its empathetic character writing and its ability to find profound resonance in the mundane aspects of daily life, cementing its reputation among connoisseurs of character-focused graphic literature.
