Where it came from
The Double Decker! Doug & Kirill volume serves as a supplemental print release for the 2018 anime series produced by Sunrise. Developed as a high-octane buddy cop procedural, the series aimed to subvert genre tropes through its stylized, irreverent aesthetic and the dynamic interplay between the veteran investigator Doug Billingham and his idealistic, if naive, partner Kirill Vrubel. This volume captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the production, reflecting the vibrant, neon-drenched atmosphere of the city of Lisvalletta.
The source material was heavily influenced by late 20th-century police dramas, reinterpreted through the lens of modern Japanese animation. Suzuki Tomohiro, who provided the narrative framework, focused on balancing comedic character interactions with the mystery-solving mechanics central to the plot. Upon its release, the project was noted for its unconventional storytelling approach, which favored a humorous, self-aware tone that departed from the more serious tone of many contemporary detective series.
