Where it came from
Dragon Ball AF originated as a persistent internet hoax in the late 1990s and early 2000s, surfacing as a fan-made concept of a 'sequel' to the original series. Before he became the official illustrator for Dragon Ball Super, the artist Toyotarou—then known by the handle Toyble—created his own fan manga iteration of this mythos. This version gained significant traction within the online community for its high-quality mimics of Akira Toriyama’s distinct art style and its integration of popular fan-created characters like Super Saiyan 5 Son Goku.
Toyotarou’s work on this project served as a creative bridge between fan culture and professional production. His ability to capture the kinetic energy and character designs of the original series eventually caught the attention of Shueisha, leading to his professional recruitment. While Dragon Ball AF remains an unofficial, non-canon endeavor, it occupies a unique space in anime history as a testament to how fan communities engaged with the franchise during the long hiatus between the conclusion of Dragon Ball GT and the eventual return of the series.
