Where it came from
Avan the Brave and the Demon King of Hellfire serves as a canonical prequel to the seminal manga series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. Written by Riku Sanjo and illustrated by Yusaku Shibata, this volume was produced to flesh out the backstory of Avan, the legendary mentor and hero. It provides readers with a deeper understanding of his early struggles and the events that ultimately defined his noble character before the main events of the original series.
The narrative design focuses on bridging gaps in the lore of the Dragon Quest universe while maintaining the high-fantasy aesthetic established by Koji Inada’s original character designs. The collaboration between Sanjo and Shibata was intended to capture the classic adventurous tone of the franchise while delivering a more mature, focused origin story. Upon its release, the work was well-received by long-time fans who appreciated the expansion of the lore and the commitment to the series' foundational spirit.
