Where it came from
Duelant was written and illustrated by Matsubara Toshimitsu, serializing within the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump during the mid-1990s. The series emerged during a highly competitive era for the magazine, attempting to carve out a niche by blending traditional martial arts themes with the high-stakes, hyper-stylized action sequences that defined the aesthetic of that decade’s shonen manga.
The design of the series centers on intense, kinetic paneling and character-focused drama. While Matsubara Toshimitsu brought a distinct visual flair to the work, the series struggled to maintain a lasting foothold against the dominant titans of the Jump lineup at the time. As a result, it remains a notable example of the ephemeral nature of serialized manga, cherished primarily by enthusiasts who specialize in late 20th-century cult titles.
