Ekiben Hitoritabi

Ekiben Hitoritabi, authored by Kan Sakurai and illustrated by Hayase Jun, began its serialization in 2007 within the pages of Manga Action. The series was conceived as a culinary travelogue centered on the Japanese tradition of ekiben—regionally specific bento boxes sold at railway stations—following the journey of a protagonist who travels the country by train to sample these local delicacies. It emerged during a period of rising interest in regional Japanese cuisine and rail travel culture, serving as both a guide and a narrative exploration of local food heritage.

The design and artistic approach prioritize atmospheric accuracy, with Jun providing detailed illustrations that capture the aesthetics of various Japanese rail lines and the presentation of the meals themselves. Sakurai, known for his expertise in railway culture, utilized the manga to bridge technical interest in train travel with the intimate, sensory experience of regional dining. Upon its release, the work was well-received by readers for its educational value and its ability to romanticize the act of slow travel, eventually inspiring a broader appreciation for the diverse bento culture across Japan's prefectures.
