Where it came from
ES, published in the mid-1990s, represents a departure from the traditional romance tropes often associated with Souryou Fuyumi's earlier catalog. Created during a period of experimentation within the shojo manga industry, the series explores themes of identity, biotechnology, and the ethics of human cloning, grounding its speculative fiction elements in the psychological complexity for which the author is known.
The character designs and visual execution reflect Fuyumi's transition toward a more refined, cinematic aesthetic. By prioritizing atmospheric tension and introspective dialogue over conventional action, the series received critical notice for its intellectual depth and its ability to weave complex scientific ethics into a narrative framework, cementing Fuyumi's reputation as a versatile storyteller capable of navigating dense, mature themes.
