Where it came from
Eve no Jikan, or Time of Eve, originated as a six-part original net animation series released between 2008 and 2009 by Studio Rikka. Directed and written by Yoshiura Yasuhiro, the work explores the ethical complexities of a society where androids are integrated into daily life, yet mandated to appear indistinguishable from humans except for a halo-like ring above their heads. The series was created to investigate the nuance of human-robot empathy, focusing on a quiet, intimate café where the rule of non-discrimination between humans and androids is strictly enforced.
Following the success of the web series, the story was adapted into a feature-length film and a manga serialization illustrated by Ota Yuuki. The design philosophy throughout these iterations centers on a subdued, grounded aesthetic that prioritizes atmospheric tension and philosophical dialogue over spectacle. The work was received with significant critical acclaim for its mature narrative, earning praise for its ability to tackle themes of consciousness and identity within the constraints of a modest, localized setting.
