Where it came from
Exilers, authored by ThatAngryShorty, emerged from the independent web-based manga movement that gained traction through platforms like Tapas and Webtoon. The series was conceived to explore themes of isolation and systemic displacement, utilizing a stylized aesthetic that favors high-contrast linework to emphasize the psychological tension of its characters. Its creation reflects a broader shift in digital publishing where creators bypass traditional editorial gatekeepers to find niche audiences directly.
The design of the series centers on a minimalist approach to character silhouettes, a stylistic choice intended to make the protagonists feel universal yet detached from their environment. Critical reception has highlighted the intentional pacing as a strength, noting that ThatAngryShorty successfully builds atmosphere through quiet, atmospheric panels that contrast with the more kinetic action sequences found in typical shonen-inspired works.
