Where it came from
Existence, written and illustrated by the South Korean creator Kwang-jin, emerged within the burgeoning landscape of webtoons, a format that has revolutionized global manga consumption. The series serves as a philosophical exploration of the human experience, framed through a narrative that blends metaphysical inquiry with the high-stakes tension characteristic of contemporary action-oriented manhwa. Kwang-jin conceptualized the work to challenge readers' perspectives on morality and life, utilizing a sharp, modern art style that emphasizes character fluidity and visceral impact to convey complex existential themes.
The reception of the series has been largely defined by its departure from traditional genre tropes, leaning into psychological drama to anchor its supernatural premise. By focusing on the weight of an individual's presence and the cyclical nature of human behavior, the work reflects a trend in current webcomic production toward deeper, narrative-driven storytelling. Kwang-jin’s design choices, characterized by clean lines and dramatic tonal shifts, have resonated with a digital-first audience that prioritizes thematic depth alongside kinetic visual storytelling.
