Where it came from
Explaining the Lotus Sutra with Manga was produced during a period when Japanese religious organizations sought to modernize the dissemination of core Buddhist teachings to younger or less specialized audiences. By leveraging the visual accessibility of manga, the project aimed to translate complex philosophical concepts from the Lotus Sutra into a digestible, narrative format that could reach a broader secular demographic during the late 20th century.
The illustrations were created by Jiro Kuwata, a prominent manga artist best known for his work on the 1960s Cyborg 009 and the manga adaptation of Batman. His involvement brought a polished, kinetic visual style to the didactic text, demonstrating his ability to adapt his signature dynamic layouts to spiritual subject matter, which helped ground the abstract theological discourse in a medium that was fundamentally approachable and engaging.
