Where it came from
Eyeshield 21 is a Japanese manga series written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2002 to 2009. The story follows Sena Kobayakawa, a timid high school student who discovers his exceptional speed after being coerced into joining the school's American football team. Inspired by the growing interest in American football in Japan at the time, the series blends traditional shonen sports tropes with a fast-paced, high-stakes tactical approach to the sport.
The series is particularly noted for Murata’s dynamic and energetic illustration style, which captures the visceral intensity of football plays with fluid, expressive character designs. Upon its release, it became a significant commercial success and is widely credited with increasing the popularity of American football in Japan. It remains a staple of the sports manga genre, praised for balancing character development with the technical nuances of its chosen discipline.
