Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm ...

The collection of fairy tales gathered by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm was first published in 1812 under the title Kinder- und Hausmärchen. Originally intended as an academic project to preserve German folklore and oral traditions, the stories were transcribed from various contributors to ensure the preservation of linguistic and cultural heritage. The brothers applied an increasingly literary tone to subsequent editions, refining the prose to make the tales more accessible to a broader audience.

The aesthetic presentation of these tales has evolved through centuries of illustration, ranging from the intricate woodcuts of the nineteenth century to modern artistic interpretations. The specific edition identified by its LCCN 01000866 reflects a long history of institutional and private interest in this classic work. The endurance of the collection is attributed to the Brothers Grimm's commitment to capturing the stark, often moralistic, and archetypal nature of German folktales, which transitioned from being regional curiosities to foundational texts of Western children’s literature.
