Fairy tales and household stories collected by the brothers Grimm, with plates by H.L. Shindler

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm first published their collection of Kinder- und Hausmärchen in the early 19th century as a scholarly pursuit to preserve the German oral tradition. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these folk tales had evolved into standard literary canon for children, leading to numerous illustrated editions designed to bring the narrative world to life for a domestic audience.

The specific edition featuring plates by H.L. Shindler reflects the Victorian and Edwardian preoccupation with ornate, decorative book illustration. Shindler’s work in this volume utilizes the prevailing aesthetic of the period, emphasizing detailed line work and romanticized character studies that sought to emphasize the moral and atmospheric qualities of the tales, securing their place as a staple of both library shelves and family reading rooms.
