Where it came from
Figure 17, also known as Figure 17: Tsubasa & Hikaru, is a science fiction manga and anime series created by Genco and directed by Yoshitaka Kawaguchi. It centers on the unlikely bond between an introverted girl named Tsubasa and an alien warrior named Hikaru, who merge to combat hostile extraterrestrial lifeforms. The series was designed to explore themes of emotional growth and personal responsibility through a fusion of slice-of-life storytelling and high-stakes action.
The character design and visual direction are noted for their grounded aesthetic, which contrasts the mundane, rural setting of Hokkaido with the sleek, otherworldly appearance of the alien invaders. Released in the early 2000s, the work was received as a nuanced entry in the genre, moving away from traditional hero tropes to focus on the psychological development of its lead character. Its production sought to create a balance between melancholic atmosphere and tactical science fiction, cementing its status as a distinct, albeit understated, title in the early 2000s animation landscape.
