Figures contemporaines tirées de l'Album Mariani

The Figures contemporaines tirées de l'Album Mariani is a multi-volume biographical project compiled by Angelo Mariani, a Corsican chemist and entrepreneur. Beginning in 1894, these volumes served as a prestigious showcase for individuals who endorsed Vin Mariani, a coca-infused wine that gained international fame in the late 19th century. The collection was conceived as a marketing masterstroke, blending commercial promotion with a catalog of the era's elite intellectuals, artists, and political figures.

Each volume features high-quality portraits accompanied by short, autographed testimonials or biographies of the subjects. The aesthetic reflects the Belle Époque's fascination with fame and prestige, utilizing contributors from notable engravers and photographers of the period. The series was well-received by contemporary society as a definitive record of the influential people who moved within Mariani's social and professional circle, transforming an advertising campaign into a notable historical archive of the fin de siècle.
