Where it came from
Fishing Fools, or Tsurikichi Sanpei, was created by mangaka Takao Yaguchi and first serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 1973. Yaguchi, who grew up in the rural Akita Prefecture, drew heavily from his own childhood experiences of fishing in the mountains and rivers to create the series. The manga was conceived as a tribute to the art and patience of fishing, serving as both a technical guide and a celebration of the Japanese countryside.
The character of Sanpei Mihira was designed to embody a pure, obsessive passion for angling, often tackling legendary fish with limited equipment and sheer intuition. Yaguchi's detailed, realistic illustrations of aquatic life and natural landscapes were highly praised, leading the series to win the Kodansha Manga Award in 1974. It remains a foundational work in the sports and nature genres of manga, having inspired multiple television adaptations and a devoted following that spans generations.
