Where it came from
Matagi, authored by Yaguchi Takao, emerged in the mid-1970s as a poignant exploration of the traditional bear hunters of the Tohoku region in Japan. Yaguchi, who was deeply influenced by his own upbringing in a rural mountain village, sought to document the fading culture and intricate relationship between the Matagi people and the wilderness. The series is celebrated for its authentic depiction of mountain survival, animal behavior, and the spiritual respect the hunters held for nature.
The artistic style of the manga is characterized by Yaguchi's detailed, realistic renderings of the harsh, snow-swept landscapes and his ability to convey the rugged humanity of his subjects. Upon its release, Matagi was received as a significant work of regional literature, credited with preserving the historical customs of the Matagi and elevating the status of nature-focused manga. It remains a hallmark of Yaguchi's career, reflecting his lifelong commitment to honoring the traditions of his ancestors through his craft.
