Fuku-chan

Fuku-chan first appeared in 1936 as a character within the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, created by the cartoonist Yokoyama Ryuuichi. The character, a young boy with a distinctive shaved head and a cheerful personality, was originally conceived as a supporting role in the serial Edokko Ken-chan before his immense popularity led to his own standalone series. This work became a staple of Japanese newspaper comics, reflecting the social shifts and everyday life of the Showa era with a gentle, observational humor that resonated deeply with a broad public audience.

Yokoyama Ryuuichi’s design for Fuku-chan was noted for its minimalist, clean lines and expressive simplicity, which allowed the character to remain recognizable and endearing over several decades of publication. The series was highly influential in the development of modern Japanese manga, setting a template for the gag-strip format. Throughout its long run, the strip served as a cultural touchstone in Japan, celebrated for its ability to provide levity during both pre-war and post-war periods while maintaining a consistent artistic identity.
