Where it came from
Gekka no Kishi, or 'Knight of the Moonlight,' was serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original from 1993 to 2001. Written and illustrated by Junichi Noujou, the series centers on the highly competitive and intellectual world of professional shogi. It emerged during a period when seinen manga began to deeply explore niche cultural pastimes through dramatic, high-stakes narratives.
Noujou is known for a gritty, realistic artistic style that favors intense psychological tension over flashy action. In Gekka no Kishi, he utilizes dramatic chiaroscuro and detailed character expressions to reflect the mental exhaustion and fierce rivalries of top-tier shogi players. The series was well-received for its authentic portrayal of the game's culture and earned the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1997, solidifying its place as a classic in the sports and strategy manga genre.
